摘要
The effects of temperature and thermal exposure on the mechanical properties and failure behavior of a nickel aluminide (Ni3Al) (IC-221) reinforced with Al2O3 particulates were investigated. The high temperature specific yield strength of the composite was higher than the unreinforced matrix at all the temperatures tested. An increase as high as 40% was exhibited. However, only a slight improvement in specific modulus was observed at room temperature. The composite demonstrated near 100% strength retention after thermal exposures at 1000-degrees-C. Specimens with diffusion-bonded surface foils indicated that surface flaws typically account for a 20% decrease in failure strength. Compression creep tests at 650 and 700-degrees-C indicated an improvement in creep strength over unreinforced IC-221.
