THERMODYNAMICS OF MIXTURES

The paper deals with mixtures of fluids in a single fluid phase and analyzes them with the aid of the methods of classical thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The analysis shows that it is necessary to make a distinction between strongly and weakly interacting mixtures. The paper identifies the independent thermodynamic variables in each case, derives the appropriate Gibbs equation and establishes the expression for entropy production and the general form of the rate equations. The comparison with rational thermodynamics is given.
