摘要
The object of this essay is to analyze the character and development of the movement which coalesced around Ian Paisley during Northern Ireland's turbulent 1960s. Examining Paisleyism's place within the broader context of Sixties Northern Ireland will act to reveal its contested role in, and response to, that society's unraveling. Within this decade Paisleyism emerged simultaneously as: a politicized evangelical Protestant faith tied to a newly formed Church; a leader of street protests; and an electoral rival to the state's architect and hegemonic power. Whilst its role as a reactive force is clear, analysis of Paisleyism's acrimonious relationship with the established Protestant and unionist institutions of Ireland reveals it also to be a transformative populist movement.
