ON THE MAIN CRACK-MICROCRACK INTERACTION UNDER MODE-III LOADING

This article presents a general solution to the problem of the interaction between a semi-infinite crack and an arbitrarily located and oriented microcrack near its tip under mode III loading conditions. The analysis is based upon a rigorous formulation utilizing the complex potentials for the antiplane problem and an appropriate superposition scheme. The combined effect of applied and residual stresses is considered. The stress intensity factors at the tips of both the main crack and the microcrack are obtained explicitly in general series forms. The leading order approximate solutions are also derived with the aid of a perturbation technique. The present study compliments the corresponding solutions of mode I and II loading existing in the literature.
