EFFECT OF SALINITY ON COTTON PLANTS GROWN UNDER NITRATE OR AMMONIUM NUTRITION AT DIFFERENT CALCIUM LEVELS

The effects of NaCl salinity on growth, photosynthesis, transpiration and mineral composition of cotton plants grown in NH4+ or NO3- solutions at two Ca2+ levels were studied. Salinity affected the growth of plants cultivated either with NH4+ or NO3-. Potassium uptake was decreased by high Ca2+ level and salinity. Reduction of Na+ concentration at high Ca2+ was observed. Salinity only affected photosynthesis in high Ca2+-ammonium-fed plants. Similarly, salinity only reduced transpiration and stomatal conductance in NH4+-fed plants. High Ca+2 did not ameliorate depressive effects of salinity, and no benefit was observed for NH4+-grown plants.
