LONDON-CITY-AIRPORT

A brief history and chronology of London City Airport open this Paper, which covers work done over more than ten years. The layout of the airport, as in use 1987-91 is described, followed by a detailed exposition of how this initial layout was derived and gained planning permission and other necessary approvals. The design and construction of the airport in 1986-87 is next explained, with sections covering the runway, the drainage, the unusual apron structure, the passenger terminal and the navaids and ground lighting. The Paper then turns to the developed airport with its extended runway, addressing first the characteristics of the aircraft that would operate from it. In the urban location obstacle clearance on both take off and landing was a key issue and this is considered in some detail. The resulting layout of the developed airport is described along with the acoustic considerations in its operation. Some information on the costs of construction, and means of access to and from the airport, concludes the Paper.
