LANGMUIR-BLODGETT MULTILAYERS FROM POLYMERS FOR LOW-LOSS PLANAR WAVE-GUIDES

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers from preformed polymers were prepared for waveguiding. The anisotropic refractive index was measured using waveguide spectroscopy at the wavelengths 785 nm, 633 nm and 442 nm. Optical loss measurements using a fiber method to detect the scattered light from the planar waveguide yielded a low attenuation of 2 dB/cm at 633 nm for films of 0.8-mu-m thickness.
