The Spanish composer Angel Barrios played an important role in the artistic and musical arena of Granada during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). His musical activity would lay the foundations for the musical revival in this city after the war. The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the musical and cultural context of Granada at the time, and to highlight different facets of Angel Barrios as a composer, performer and conductor of the many music ensembles existing in Granada during this critical period in the cultural history of Spain.
