JOSEP SUNYOL I GARRIGA. SPORTS AND CITIZENSHIP

This article is about the figure of Josep Sunyol i Garriga, journalist, politician and president of FC Barcelona at the time of his murder at the hands of Franco's troops in the first weeks of the Civil War, and who for decades has remained virtually forgotten. This article discusses the many facets of a character who was important in Catalonia in the first third of the 20th century and was noted for his activity in the press, politics and sports. This activity was carried out against the background of his leftist republican and Catalanist postulates and his outstanding contribution to the concepts of sport and citizenship, linked to the process of construction of modernity which Catalonia was undergoing at the time and to which Sunyol gave content through his nation-building perspective.
