A comparison between placental weight and number of fetuses in normal mice and those in mice unilaterally ovariectomized on the 6th day of pregnancy revealed a relative hypertrophy of the placentae of the latter group, with a predominance of the effect in litter sizes of .gtoreq. 5. The weights of the fetuses in the unilaterally ovariectomized group were not significantly different from those of the controls, thus affording no evidence of a causal connection between fetal weight and gross placental weight.
