A method for solving the problem of the stability of a cylindrical shell made of a shape memory alloy is proposed. The alloy undergoes the direct martensitic transformation under uniform axial compression, torsional moment, and uniform external pressure. It is shown that the additional structural changes that occur during buckling considerably reduce the critical loads for thin-walled shells. It is also important to allow for the additional phase transition in medium-thickness shells. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
