A PULSE-RADIOLYSIS STUDY ON THE TRANSIENT PRODUCTS OF RADIOLYTIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF SELENITE AND SELENATE IONS IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTIONS

Transient products of radiolytic transformations of selenite and selenate ions in aqueous solutions were studied using the technique of pulse radiolysis. Rate constants of the reactions of OH radicals with selenite and selenate ions [equal to (1.6 +/- 0.2) x 10(9) and (3.9 +/- 0.8) x 10(5) dm3 mol-1 s-1, respectively], and of e(aq) with selenate ions [(1.4 +/- 0.2) x 10(9) dm3 mol-1 s-1], along with the decay rate constants of SeO3- and SeO4- [2k=(1.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(9) and (6.8 +/- 0.7) x 10(7) dm3 mol-1 s-1, respectively] were measured. Molar absorption coefficients were determined for SeO3-, epsilon(420) = (1.6 +/- 0.2) x 10(3) and epsilon(580) = (6.3 +/- 0.7) x 10(2) dm3 mol-1 cm-1 and SeO4-, epsilon(590) = (1.3 +/- 0.3) x 10(3) dm3 mol-1 cm-1.
