Drive units where the rotation is generated directly via a rotary piston, as well as those where a linear movement obtained by a rack and pinion system is transformed into rotation are most widely known. With rotary piston drives the angle of rotation is limited to less than 360 degree ; via a rack and pinion system, 720 degree and more can be reached. Several examples from automation and clamping engineering are mentioned to illustrate the application of particularly light, compact miniature rotary drive units.
