CHANGES IN THE POPULATION-DYNAMICS OF PARTRIDGES (PERDIX-PERDIX) IN THE REGION OF CZEMPIN WESTERN POLAND DURING THE PERIOD 1968-1988

Population growth and seasonal mortality of a partridge population occupying a 150 km2 area near Czempin, western Poland were recorded and compared for different time periods with varying population densities within the total investigation period. During the period 1968 to 1975 the spring population density varied between 8.0 and 34.5 (average 20.4), and the autumn density from 16.4 to 63.8 (average 42.1) partridges/km2. In the spring of 1978 the density decreased to 3.9 birds/km2. During the period 1985 to 1988 the autumn density was recorded as 4.0-8.7 birds/km2 (Fig. 1). The production of young birds during the period 1968 to 1973 varied from 4.6 to 7.0 (average 5.6) or young/adult 3.3 to 5.1 (average 4.4) birds/km2. During the years 1975 to 1977 these numbers decreased to 2.0-4.1 (2.8) and 1.2-3.3 (2.0) respectively. From 1985 to 1988 the totals recorded were 3.8-5.4 (4.3) and 2.3-3.6 (2.7) (Fig. 2).
