ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The agenda for the development of energy must give environmental considerations equal priority. Equally important is the awareness of international cooperation and coordination. The population growth rates of 4-4.5% for developing economies, combined with growth rates of 4.0-4.5% in GNP up to the year 2010 and the trends in urbanization present challenging opportunities for energy conservation and the development of energy based industries to meet the 22 mbd of oil in LDC countries in 2010. The large untapped reserves of environmentally sound renewable energies together with clean coal technologies should be maximized. International energy organizations must and can play a key role in the development of these technologies and the human resources required to develop and carry out government policies and industrial capabilities to meet the growing energy needs of mankind.
