NEW CONCEPTS FOR SEA-WATER DESALINATION PLANTS WITH GAS-TURBINES

Where gas turbines are used for power generation in plants producing both electricity and fresh water from sea-water, the present method of heating in the desalination system is to cool the turbine exhaust gases in waste-heat boilers, so providing low-pressure steam to condenser units for preheating the sea-water, which is distilled by the multi-stage flash process. The authors describe and compare alternatives to this technology. Flow configurations, operating principles and environmental aspects are considered, and recommendations made with respect to the various layouts.
