Promoting continence in people with multiple sclerosis: A guide

Many multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers will experience difficulty with urinary continence at some time during the course of their disease. Although certain types of problems are common in this population, they are not exclusive. Identification of underlying bladder pathologies can prove difficult, resulting in delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatments being carried out. Recent literature suggests using specialist continence teams; however, common pathologies can be compounded by associated functional deficits in mobility and dexterity as well as other problems, making patient management more difficult. The multidisciplinary team can play a valuable role alongside the specialist continence team. This article describes the common bladder problems experienced by people with MS and gives practical advice on how health professionals can promote continence in this group.
