PREPARATION OF ACTIVATED CARBONS FROM HOLM-OAK WOOD - 2-STEP ACTIVATION USING AIR AND CO2 OR STEAM

Charcoal prepared from holm-oak wood has been used as raw material to prepare activated carbons using the reaction with air at 450-degrees-C, previous or subsequently, to the activation in CO2 or steam at 900-degrees-C, up to 40% burn-off. The gas adsorption results indicate that the air degrades the charcoal surface. This degradation is positive when the air is used as the first reactive agent, but if it is used as the second reactive agent this leads to a diminution in the existing porosity.
