摘要：

Using the Concept of modernity by Marshall Berman, this paper tries to demonstrate how Machado de Assis's Novels can be examined from the perspective of the evolution and the paradoxes of modern society, without the division of the first and second phases. The starting point for this rapprochement between Machado and Berman is a small house with a blue flag from the novel Helena - where lives an honourable, intelligent but poor man, that symbolizes the other side of modernity - and goes until the suffering of the couple Aguiar at the end of Memorial de Aires, when Machado doesn't believe anymore in modernity promises for these small tragedies.
