摘要：

This article is a reflection on the unique story of the Museum of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and the formation of its identity throughout its 26 years of existence. It cannot be characterized as a traditional university museum in that it has no collections for teaching and research exclusively targeted to the academic community, and basic educational needs. However while simultaneously seeking to research, disseminate and promote the cultural heritage of UFRGS through its various collections, it has understood how the intellectual heritage or cultural collection produced at the university democratizes access to culture and science through the preservation and dissemination of memory, heritage education and socioeducational-cultural work.
