摘要：

Nearly 50 years ago a young South African engineer was instrumental in the prototype development of a high energy impact compactor roller. The compactor was a large concrete block which resembled a square wheel being pulled behind a tractor. its performance was impressive whereas its reliability and mechanical robustness were not.
