Chloride abstraction from [(eta6- CrH6)RuCl2]2 by a variety of reagents in acetonitrile leads to [(eta6-C6H6)RuCl(CH3CN)2]+ (1+) salts; the BF4- salt has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. In acetonitrile, both CH3CN ligands are displaced by 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene, 2,2'-bipyridine, or 1,10-phenanthroline to give [(eta6-C6H6)Ru(L-L)Cl]+ chelates, while triphenylphosphine yields [(eta6-C6H6)Ru(PPh3)-(CH3CN)Cl]+BF4-. The lability of the Cl ligands is indicated by the disproportionation of 1+ in nitromethane to yield {[(eta6-C6H6)RU]2(mu-Cl)3}+.
