A water soluble biomolecular compound of D-galactose and D-mannose in a molar ratio of 3:2 was isolated from the seeds of C spectabilis. Hydrolysis of methylated biopolymer furnished: (i) 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-O-methyl-D-galactose, (ii) 2, 3, 4-tri-O-methyl-D-galactose and (iii) 2, 3-di-O-methyl-D-mannose; while partial acidic hydrolysis yielded (i) Epimefibiose, (ii) Mannobiose, (iii) Galactosyl epimelibiose and (iv) Swictenose, suggesting most tenable structure for biopolymer.
