EFFECTS OF SODIUM DODECYL-SULFATE ON THE GROWTH OF CANDIDA-LIPOLYTICA

The effects of an ionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, on the growth of Candida lipolytica were studied. Surfactant concentrations of 0.07%, 0.09% and 0.11% were added to the culture medium at different time points of the growth curve (0, 8, 16 and 24 hours of culture). The growth of Candida lipolytica at 27 degrees C was evaluated over 96 h by viable cell counts (CFU/mL), maximum growth rate and generation time. The inhibition of growth observed was dependent on the addition time and concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate used; no inhibitory effect was detected when the surfactant was introduced at time 24 h of culture.
