摘要：
The contribution offers an overview of the evolution of the public library concept and of the professional role of librarianship, acting as Social Transformation Agents in the country during the last 35 years, with some examples that highlight the social function of the system and the varied manners of management with public and private participation. The conclusion of this analysis of the Colombian experience points to the challenges presented by the 21st century according to the Millennium Goals.
