ABSENCE OF THE ELECTRONIC EFFECT IN THE METAL METAL-BONDING OF TELLURIUM ANALOGS OF THE CHEVREL-PHASES AND RELATED-PHASES

摘要
The electronic effect, which is a major characteristic of the bonding in the Chevrel phase sulphides and selenides, is shown here to be absent in the closely related tellurides. The interpretation of inter-atomic distances in the tellurides together with novel low temperature heat capacity data demonstrate that the nature of bonding in the tellurides is distinctly different from that in the analogous sulphides and selenides. The results show that low temperature heat capacity data can be used as a probe for subtle changes in bonding, even when the compounds under examination have comparatively complex structures.
