The erudite circles of Lisbon, Evora and Porto in the first half of the 19th century. Notes on the early reception of the Help Songbook

This article reconstructs the intelectual circles that, in the cities of Lisbon, Evora and Porto, stimulated copy and study of the Cancioneiro da Ajuda (A) during the first half of 19th century. According to this aim, the paper analises the writings that, in this period, looked after the poetic compilation, particularly those signed by A. Ribeiro dos Santos. Also, this essay studies the data contained in the copies that were made from the Cancioneiro or from the sheets coming from Evora - specifically, the copy preserved at the Library Jagiello ! ska of Krakow ( Ms. Lusitan. fol. 1), the copy placed at the Library of the Academia das Ciencias of Lisbon ( Ms. Az. 586) and the copies from the Evora's sheets that were made by A. Nunes de Carvalho ( National Library of Portugal, Cod. 11191), J. H. da Cunha Rivara (Public Library of Evora, Ms. CXIV/ 2-34) and T. Norton ( Hispanic Society of America, New York, Ms. HC 380-776). Finally, the first edition of the manuscript, that was published by Ch. Stuart in 1823, is reviewed.
