BASIC CONSIDERATIONS ON THE GROWTH OF METALLIC LAYERS BY MOLECULAR-BEAM EPITAXY - APPLICATION TO CR/FE, AG/FE AND CU/CO MULTILAYERS

摘要
It is shown that. apart from the standard criterion on the lattice matching of the two metals, other simple considerations can be used to select metal pairs suitable for the growth of high quality epitaxial metallic multilayers. Surface energy and surface diffusion, which are related to the bond energy and thus to the melting temperature, are in particular essential to consider. Ag/Fe and Cu/Co (in contrast with Cr/Fe) multilayers are typical examples of multilayers in which the << hard >> and << soft >> metals behave differently during growth and give rise to strongly asymmetric inter-faces.
