ELECTROSPRAY MASS-SPECTROMETRY OF POLY(ETHYLENE GLYCOLS) WITH MOLECULAR-WEIGHTS UP TO 5 MILLION

Mass analysis has been carried out on ions formed in an electrospray (ES) ion source from poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) with molecular weights (Ms) ranging from 200 to 5 000 000. The number of charges per unit length of oligomer decreases with increasing molecular weight (M) in the range below M = 20000. Above that value the number increases until at M = 5 000 000 it slightly exceeds the maximum allowed by the electrostatic model previously proposed. This behavior can be understood in terms of the solution properties of PEG and the two mechanisms that have been proposed for the formation of ions from charged droplets.
