A method is described for the quantitative determination of alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEO) in synthetic surfactants and in wastewaters. Gaseous stripping into ethyl acetate is employed to extract the analytes from wastewater samples. Normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HP-LC) using bonded-phase aminosilica columns allows the separation and quantitative determination of oligomeric APEO. For the major oligomers relative deviations range from 2 to 10%. Estimated limits of detection for individual oligomers are 1 mu g/L, and recovery of total APEO is 87%.
