ADSORPTION OF A MODEL EPOXY-RESIN, N-PROPYL-2-HYDROXYBUTYLAMINE, ON ALUMINUM SURFACES STUDIED BY STATIC SECONDARY-ION MASS-SPECTROSCOPY

Adsorption of a model epoxy resin, N-propyl-2-hydroxybutylamine, on aluminum surfaces has been detected by SSIMS. The chemisorbed species is shown to be the undissociated molecule. The surface treatment of the aluminum is critical for adsorption. Phosphoric acid anodization produced the best adsorbent, while alkaline etching gave no adsorption. Competitive adsorption of the model compound and a secondary amine shows that N-propyl-2-hydroxybutylamine is not readily displaced from a phosphoric acid anodized substrate surface by the amine.
