Nausea and vomiting is a common problem in pregnancy. Severe or prolonged nausea, with or without vomiting is termed hyperemesis gravidarum, and often requires hospitalization for correction of electrolyte imbalance and nutritional defects. Fortunately, these symptoms are self-limited and usually improve as pregnancy progresses. However, prolonged or severe symptoms will require lengthy or recurring hospitalization for parenteral rehydration. A case of severe hyperemesis gravidarum which was successfully treated with home parenteral rehydration is presented. Discussions of potential complications, the nutritional regimen, and monitoring are included.
