Fractures in Children and Adolescents Distal Humerus Supracondylar Fractures

Distal humerus supracondylar fractures are frequently encountered in children. Unlike other sites in the immature skeleton, the distal humerus lacks significant remodeling potential; therefore, it is important to treat these fractures with the goal of obtaining and maintaining anatomic alignment. This article will highlight current concepts regarding fracture patterns, management options, and surgical techniques. Controversial topics are presented with reference to supporting literature to assist the orthopedist in decision making. In general, nondisplaced fractures can be managed nonoperatively; whereas, displaced fractures should be manipulated and pinned in a timely fashion so as to achieve excellent patient outcomes.
