Mendelevium-256 was produced by bombarding a Bk-249-target with Ne-22 ions in the external beam of the U-400 cyclotron at Dubna. After the irradiation Md was separated from Fm and from other reaction products by ion exchange chromatography with alpha-HIB. In the mendelevium fraction Md-256 was identified by alpha-spectrometry, according to its decay curve in equilibrium with Fm-256, and also by following its behaviour during extraction with HDEHP. The extraction of Md with trioctylphosphine oxide in the presence of complexing agents has been studied in comparison with other TPE and REE. Further the complex formation of Md and Fm with 1,2-diaminocyclohexane tetraacetic acid was investigated and the correlation of the ionic radii with the values of the complex stability constants for the TPE and REE in this system was analysed.
