A field investigation on pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] intercropping systems under rainfed situation was carried out during 2 crop seasons of 1986 and 1987. 'Bragg' soybean was found most suitable for intercropping in pigeonpea spaced 60 cm apart. This intercropping system produced the highest total production on pigeonpea-equivalent basis (2 809 kg/ha), net returns (Rs 8 763/ha) and land-equivalent ratio (1.68). Though the grain yield of pigeonpea remained almost unaltered, that of soybean was 1 545 kg/ha in the mixed stands compared with 2 372 kg/ha in its sole cropping.
