Results are presented of studies of a quasi-CW low-threshold laser (lambda = 2.03 and 2.65-mu-m) utilizing the Ar-Xe mixture and excited by uranium fission fragments. For the Ar:Xe = 400:1 mixture at the pressure of 0.25 atm the lasing threshold at lambda = 2.03-mu-m is achieved at the thermal neutron flux density of 1.5.10(12) (cm2.s)-1 which corresponds to the specific pumping power of approximately 0.02 W/cm3. Feasibility is shown of pumping this laser by alpha particles from radioisotopic sources of Po-210 and Cm-242.
