A theoretical investigation of the dependence of the main processing parameters on the resulting ribbon thicknesses for the planar flow casting (PFC) method is reported. It is shown that three different modes of the melt outflow are discernible. Three equations, providing the dependence between the ribbon thickness and the main technological parameters of the process-ejection pressure, substrate velocity, nozzle slot breadth and crucible-to-wheel gap distance-are proposed. The calculations carried out with the aid of these equations are in agreement with the empirical data. The proposed equations may be used to predict the ribbon cross-section dimensions at the production of metallic ribbons by the PFC method.
