X-ray and neutron measurements of diffuse intensity have been carried out on cobalt single crystals of different origins from room temperature up to 500 degrees C. 'Pure' Co neutron experiments revealed unusual satellite reflections along the 00.L reciprocal lattice row in the h.c.p.-f.c.c. martensitic transformation temperature regime (thus confirming results published recently), and also at room temperature. In Co with 0.25 wt% C, the satellite scattering was also observed by X-rays. An explanation is given on the basis of distribution of segregations of dilute (impurity) atoms. This is an alternative interpretation of the satellite scattering not related to pretransitional phenomena of the martensitic transformation in Co.
