Increasing numbers of analysis measurements are being carried out on cement kilns to minimize the fuel consumption and optimize the clinker quality. Continuous unbiased gas measurements on rotary cement kilns can only be carried out with dry gas sampling systems, presupposing that the sampling point has been correctly selected. The extreme sampling conditions - very high temperature and dust loading combined with alkali condensation - require a cooled probe with automatic compressed air cleaning. Integral moving gear makes it easier to handle the probe. Hartmann & Braun use a water-cooled probe and a PLC-controlled conditioning and sampling cabinet for the difficult sampling problems. An H&B probe which is also new and does not have the expensive compressed air cleaning system is suitable for monitoring the carbon monoxide at the electrostatic precipitator. A report is given of the experience with the first 100 H&B gas sampling systems in cement kilns.
