IMPACT OF OFF-SHORE OIL ON HIGHWAY SYSTEM

The paper reviews the planning aspects of oil-related projects and the way in which local authorities had to cope with a new and largely unknown situation by way of new planning strategies and the provision of supporting infrastructures. Also examined are the various types of impact on highways arising from projects and the effect on the highway structure from increased traffic and loads, the effect on the manual labour organisation, the problems of oil and gas pipelines and other problems. Construction aspects of some of the problems associated with roadworks on sites which are different from the average both in terms of remoteness and of climatic conditions are also considered.
