Since their first emergence during the late eighties, organic field-effect transitors (OFETs) have been the subject of numerous works. In the present paper, we review the materials that have been used in OFETs, and analyse their operating mode. The performance of organic transistor are compared to that of single crystalline and amorphous silicon transistors. Particularly, we discuss the charge transport mechanims in organic solids, and their connection with structural properties. Finally, possible future developments of organic transitors are given.
