ACOUSTICAL DESIGN ECONOMIC TRADEOFF FOR TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT

This paper discusses cost benefit levels of different engine, airframe design, and operational measures taken to reduce the noise produced by commercial transport aircraft below certification noise limits. Weight, fuel and time penalities are taken into account with some historical noise-related restrictions imposed on noisier aircraft by airport operators and/or government agencies. The potential advantages of low-noise design are outlined, with special attention given to their effects on noise perception in surrounding communities, the evaluation of which is also discussed.
