摘要
Not being marred by colonization and one-sided exploitation, the relationship between Japan and the Western world is an unusual one, yet for exactly this reason it can serve as a mirror for changing international relationships and self-images on both sides. Looking back into the past, we can discern typical patterns of 'differences' and 'similarities' in the perception of Japan, and while these judgements remained surprisingly constant throughout the centuries, we can also see how these images were utilized on both sides for political purposes. Japan's dialogue with the West in the 20th century is a particularly exciting chapter of intercultural communication. Thus, Japan's new role in the world is also a manifestation of a re-mapping and re-interpretation of international relationships on a global scale.
