Eighty samples (10 each from workers' hands, tables, plates, towels, knives, clothes and raw and cooked meat) were collected from a food-serving establishment in the Giza area. The samples were examined for coliforms (MPN), faecal coliforms (MPN) and E. coli (MPN). 23 serotypes of E. coli (6 from workers' hands, 3 each from tables, plates, knives and 2 each from towels, clothes and raw and cooked meat) were isolated and serologically identified. The most frequently isolated enteropathogenic E. coli serotype amongst the samples examined was O26:K60 (B-6). The public health significance of EPEC is discussed and suggestions are made on how to improve sanitary conditions in food-serving establishments.
