摘要
Instances of chevron cracks in fabrications were compared with laboratory produced defects by SEM and metallographic methods. Steel BS 4360 Grade 43A was used. The mechanisms involved in the propagation of chevron cracks were studied. Evidence suggests that microfissures are formed initially as a result of a hydrogen/stress system; these microfissures then act as a sink for hydrogen remaining and when the critical concentration is reached the crack propagates. Practical aspects of avoiding chevron cracking and the implication for further work on hydrogen cracking are considered.
