Labor challenges posed by the aging process in Latin American and Caribbean populations

The purpose of this article is to review and discuss the literature dealing with the issue of older adults' employment in Latin America and the Caribbean, along with the available data, within a context where aging in populations is growing unevenly and rapidly. Indirectly, this leads us to address several supplementary issues, including gender and poverty conditions of elders. Our analysis is based on information from household surveys and population censuses, i.e., results of the 1990 and 2000 censuses, which are available on the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre (celade, for its acronym in Spanish) website. Also, we based our article on documents describing public policies on seniors' employment implemented in some countries of the Region during the past years.
