The new sugar factory at Komati in Transvaal, South Africa, has a current crushing capacity of 225 t/h which it is planned to double over the next five years. To minimize the effects of corrosion on factory equipment, wide use has been made of Cromweld 3CR12, a utility stainless steel containing 12% Cr which has proved highly suitable in wet material abrasion applications and has an installed cost only slightly higher than that of mild steel. At the factory the steel has been used for cane and other conveyors, major parts of the cane diffuser, evaporator tubes, centrifugal monitor casings, cooling tower frames, etc.
