Our Results of Pars Plana Vitrectomy in Patients with Complicated Retinal Detachment

Purpose: To evaluate the surgical results and complications of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in patients with complicated retinal detachment. Materials-Methods: Twenty-one eyes of 21 patients with a mean age of 38.2 +/- 9.2 years who had undergone PPV for treatment of complicated retinal detachment were included in the study. In all eyes, C3F8 gas or silicone oil was used as retinal tamponade after standard PPV. The changes in visual acuities, follow-up time, intra-and postoperative complications were all recorded. Results: Postoperatively, visual acuity was 0.05 or better in 12 eyes, and improved in 18 eyes, remained stable in 2 eyes, and decreased in one eye. The retina was attached in 19 eyes after a mean follow-up time of 10.2 +/- 6.4 months. The most common intraoperative complication was formation of iatrogenic retinal breaks. In the early postoperative period, transient intraocular pressure elevation was the most common complication with a rate of 14.2%. Four eyes developed cataract and underwent phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation during study follow-up. Conclusion: Pars plana vitrectomy and retinal tamponade with a long-acting gas or silicone oil is an effective and safe approach in patients with complicated retinal detachment, but these patients should be closely followed up for possible complications.
