FETUS AND PLACENTA AS A SOURCE OF INSULIN DURING PREGNANCY

Plasma insulin and blood glucose were measured before and after an intravenous glucose stimulus during pregnancy and postpartum. One group of subjects had a dead fetus in utero at the time of the 1st test. The 2nd group were tested from 24 to 72 hrs. postpartum. It appears that the excess insulin response measured in normal pregnancy is not from either the fetus or the placenta. The most probable source of the excess insulin is the maternal pancreas.
