Applying the understanding gained through recent work in cryotribology (low temperature friction and wear) the author discusses stability issues for high performance magnets. As an illustrated example, the design basis for the dry-wound, adiabatic magnet of the 35 T Hybrid III at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory is examined.
